This year’s basketball season was shadowed with sorrow and misfortune. Both the girls and the boys played games on Tuesday nights at opposite locations, while their Friday games are at the same location back to back. This schedule change forced many fans to choose between the boys and girls teams on Tuesday nights. Attendance at both the girls and boys games has been lowered significantly on Tuesdays.
The reason attendance is down on Tuesdays is because fans have to choose between going to the girls game or the boys game. Players realize this also.
“I think its sad how on Tuesdays we play at opposite locations. Fridays are awesome though, because we get to watch the girls play, and we get a combined crowd. It can get pretty packed on Fridays,” said Sr. Austin Semple, a varsity basketball player.
The girls team’s players also recognize the difference in attendance. “Guys get a lot more people on Tuesdays because people have to choose between which game to go to. It’d also be nice to be able to watch the guys play on Tuesdays. I really like Fridays though,” said Soph. Shelby Peterson.
The schedule this year is different from the way it was last year. Last year, the teams alternated from week to week by playing on both Monday and Thursday, or on Tuesday and Friday.
Doing the schedule that way made it possible for the guys to watch the girls, and vice-versa. It also let dedicated fans go to all the games, instead of having to choose between teams to watch.
All in all, the way games are scheduled needs to change. The current schedule makes it hard for fans to see both teams in action, and it is noticeably hurting the overall attendance at games. Hopefully in future years, the scheduling goes back to a system where, if a fan wants to, they can see every game that is played.
