As the spring comes in after a long cold winter, students look forward to the 10 days off from school known as spring break. This year, there is a particular day that many forget about because we are usually already on break – it’s referred to as April Fools Day.
So what is April Fools day? All of us know that it’s a day when pranks are pulled on people around the world, but the day goes back to centuries before ours. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII ordered the French, who were late to switch from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. They were celebrating New Year’s, while it was really April first on the new calendar. The people who had not yet switched were set out on “fool’s errands”. Theses people were mocked and made fun of. Now, centuries later, the pranking has resumed but in a different matter, not to just those whom didn’t change their calendar over but to pull practical jokes on each other for no reason other then to be funny.
At Zeeland West, the pranks are already being decided upon and on whom. We talked to three people, who we will keep anonymous, about the things they will pull. The first one we talked to had one of his pranks completely planned out and it was to bring in a fart machine to use on students during the day. Anonymous 2 is choosing to pick on one of his friends the entire day, doing what he can to make the most of April Fools. Anonymous 3 was still unsure of the things that he wanted to do, but as the day comes closer he will keep thinking creative to decide what major prank he will pull. Anonymous 1 said, “I’ve got some things up my sleeve.”
In the past, some pranks that were commonly pulled were more classic pranks. They were things like hot sand on a bar of soap, saran rap on the toilet seat, water on the top of the door, put a cricket in a room, and others like these.
Though the best pranks are usually planned out, many students will probably make up things during the day. So as April 1 comes and goes prepare yourself for the day and be aware of everything that goes on or may be of oddity to you.
