The second semester is now underway, and there is much to say about the school spirit among the students that are present at Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnets. But, what if you are a Senior at WESM? What does the spring semester mean to you?
There are many things that run through the brain of an active or inactive spring semester Senior in high school. What colleges have you gotten into? Who are you taking to the prom? Are you ready for graduation yet? Are you going to graduate? With all the overbearing questions beginning to pile in, some students are either too ready to leave High School or are not too sure what leaving high school really entails and are not so ready for graduation just yet.
For the average Senior, leaving and getting out of high school means leaving and getting on with real life and dealing with “grown-up” things such as university, finances, jobs, moving out, etcetera.
Some students are completely ready for the change. Senior Mecca Reed is confident that life outside of high school is going to be one worth living and cannot wait until that sweet day in June.
“I can’t wait to get out of school and live life to the fullest,” she said.
However, there is also that other average student who is not so sure and not ready for the big change of leaving home, attending university, and paying taxes, and all the “grown-up” stuff. There is that student that would much rather not have to worry about what the outside world beyond high school has to offer. There is that student that is in complete resentment of that day in June. A student who wished to remain anonymous said, “Leaving high school seems like a really huge step. What if college is not all that it’s cracked up to be? I’m screwed.”
Then, there is the student that is not so sure what to feel: Should I be happy that I am leaving high school because I am totally over it, or should I be nervous at the fact that college portrays so many unknowns that there is not enough room to be joyous?
Senior Sydney Lorenzo says, “It depends. I'm ready to leave the school because it just sucks, but I'm terrified of college and I can't afford it. I'm kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place.”
Whatever the feeling may be, being a second semester Senior is one of the best feelings of the entire high school experience and should be taken advantage of every second of every day. This moment will never happen again for many students and this is their last time to be “kids” in a sense and to also just live up the last days of the entire high school experience. No matter if you are that student who’s been ready since ninth grade year or the student who’s not so sure or even the student who is completely not ready for the change.
One feeling is the same. And, that is anxiousness.
