Odessa Johnson, owner of Crimson Jewel Stables in New Braunfels, plans to have horse camp early June through late July for kids of all ages to enjoy.
“I really want to instill---first and most important---safety on and off the horses,” Odessa said. “Second is to have fun and learn the responsibility of caring for horses.”
Crimson Jewel Stables has run a horse camp for several years. Even though it’s very educational about horses, it also includes fun and games. Kids may experience flag races, jumping, barrel racing, and many other fun horse activities depending on their skill level. Safety is one of the most important aspects at the camp.
“I’m planning on going to camp for a week,” rider, Brynn Jobson said. “I spend a lot of time there during the summer.” Brynn has been riding at Crimson Jewel for several years, and has attended camp ever since.
Crimson Jewel was first located at Retama Equestrian Center, but recently moved to its current location in New Braunfels. The facility is located five miles west of IH35 off of FM 306 towards Canyon Lake.
“At camp, you can expect to learn all safety aspects of horses, grooming, horse care, tack and equipment, horse anatomy, disciplines of riding, training techniques, and much more,” Odessa said. “It serves as a great way to get kids to come outside and earn respect towards horses.”
Crimson Jewel Stables provides a variety of well-trained horses for not only demonstrations, but riding lessons. The horses not only care for the riders, but challenge them to be their best at everything they do.
“My favorite horse is Chance,” Brynn mentioned. She has been working with Chance for several months and hopes to go to a hunter show this summer.

“My favorite camp activity is flag races,” Brynn said. “Going to camp has brought me better knowledge about horses.”
