Sierra Vista High School sophomore Stevenson Pierre is a student whose life has been affected by the Haiti earthquake. Pierre’s family living in Haiti was caught up the earthquakes’ devastation.
“I was at a friend’s house and my brother texted me that an earthquake hit Haiti,” said Pierre. “I was so afraid that my family was hurt.”
His father, uncle, aunt and cousins were all at home in Haiti when the earthquake hit. Pierre’s family got help within a few hours from the Red Cross, unlike many people who were brutally injured that day.
Students, staff, and clubs at SVHS have been aware and productive in trying to help and support Haiti.
Teacher Vicky Mangione has been selling muffins and bagels along with the Lion’s Den. For the next few weeks, all proceeds from Mangione’s sales will go to Haiti. $200 will be going to Unicef and $100 to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
Clubs including: Best Buddies, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and Cultural Society will be collecting donations for Haiti relief.
The clubs will be collecting money from Thursday, Jan. 28 through Friday, Feb. 12 in the cafeteria during both lunches.
Pierre is grateful that his family is safe and hopes other families will be as well.
“All we can do to help now is pray. Pray that families will be okay, and found,” said Pierre.
