Recently, the Clark County School District arbitrator has decided to maintain the amount of money CCSD teachers receive.

According to the Clark County Education Association, the school district will have more than $70 million in its fund balance at the end of the fiscal year, which is July 1 through June 31.

"[This] clearly demonstrates that no layoffs are needed to balance the budget," CCEA stated.

Superintendent Dwight Jones believes otherwise, stating "the ruling means teacher layoffs" in the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Thursday, May 3.

For Sierra Vista High School, this means that some teachers will be laid off. According to Principal Shawn Boyle, the school will be staffed at 93% of its expected fall enrollment.

"The possibility of losing classes and increasing class size is great," Boyle said. "We are trying to keep electives and find creative ways to make class sizes normal."

While CCEA proclaims with pride that this can be taken as a win for teachers, students and the teaching profession, it concedes that the fight must now move to the political front.

Not only is the budget change affecting schools, the government is being affected. As with other changes in finances, this change may trigger a push for raises in other fields.

Nevada already has a low number of staff, but the number of layoffs will continue to increase.
