“Music is something simple that everyone can do,” said Sergio Del Barco, who is best known for drumming on desk’s everywhere. He drums for a local band called the First Condition and started playing the drums in fifth grade symphonic band, which lead him to taking lessons in ninth grade.
A member of the Dulaney marching band drum line, Del Barco doesn’t think about anything but the music when he plays.
“It can inspire other people and make them feel happy.”
DelBarco’s ninth grade band teacher, Caitlin Cavanaugh accredits his success to his good sense of rhythm and also noted that “his personality helps his drumming.”
During a show with The First Condition at Ram’s Head in Baltimore, Del Barco drummed to the point that the skin came off of his finger, and became lodged in his snare drum. He was not even aware of this injury until after the show was over.
“Sergio has a great sense of humor which allows him to always take things in stride,” Barry Chesky, Jazz Band conductor said. He also commented that he has never seen Del Barco get frustrated.
The occurrence of shows for The First Condition, comprised of Del Barco, Frank Marzella, and Gage Maggersup, has slowed down, but recording has not. They recorded two new songs on March 24.
The First Condition has also featured the talents of guitarists including Dulaney alumni, John Russo, and current senior Wes Weitzel, as well as the singing of senior Emily Dufrane.
“Sergio is really talented and really modest. He leaves room to know that he can improve and isn’t cocky about it,” Dufrane said.
Junior Josh Wei attributes much of Del Barco’s success to his performing ability, but when asked what the main factor to his success was; Wei quickly replied, “his luscious hair”.
Del Barco will be headed to University of Maryland, College park in the fall, planning to study engineering, and with the intent to join a musical group.
“I will truly miss Sergio next year and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Chesky said.
