Ready? Go.
Off they go, faster than lightning! In flying colors, like Joseph’s technicolor dream coat, the world’s speediest snails cruise around .03mph. Yes, that’s right, snail racing is a thing.
It’s no joke; there are plenty of people out there who are diehard racers of these glamorous beasts. Just ask members of the GGC (Guinness Gastropod Convention)
Currently, the fastest snail time out there belongs to Archie, the speed demon who blew through a 13 inch track in two minutes and twenty seconds. The winners of the races, or rather, their owners, receive a cup full of lettuce as a trophy.
The racecourse itself is a circle with a radius of thirteen inches, and the snails are placed in its center. Originally, snail racing came from France. After witnessing the event, Tom Elwes founded the first “World Snail Racing Championship” which took place in Congham, Norfolk, (England) in 1960.
Since that time, snail racing has been on the rise. Although seemingly unheard of for a while, it has become increasing popular in recent years.
By inviting press coverage to snail races, the general public have been brought into this tradition. For extended information on snail racing, visit http://www.snailracing.net/, to learn more about this fascinating spectacle.
