The Walker Branch Memorial Library has been operating in North Muskegon since 1969. For 40 years, Walker Branch Library has remained the same size and not much has changed, and through the forty years, the town increased in size.
The library has more customers than it can sometimes handle and a lack of space, so in this reporters view they have to order books from other libraries many times. The North Muskegon branch does half the business of the Norton Shores branch but in one-fifth of the space.
"It’s small and getting smaller," Librarian Ms. Sharon Greenwood said.
The current layout size of the library is 3700-square-feet. If increased in size, the area would be 18,500 square feet. It would then be able to accommodate a children’s area, computer stations, and a community room.
"It probably would be good," library member Megan Rogers said.
"I’m for it," was what an anonymous library member said.
The Walker Library expects the patron base to grow from 13,000 to 15,000 users by 2035. Its current collection has 27,750 items and in the future hope to have up to 58,000 to adequately serve circulation needs in 2035.
The library is also a favorite meeting place for students. They go there after school to hang out with friends, get new books, return finished ones, use the computers, and to wait to be picked-up by parents.
According to the Muskegon Chronicle, the library hopes to be able to accommodate more computer stations for library members in the future. Another goal is to put the restrooms in a safer location and to increase the size and height of the circulation desk.
