Need extra help preparing for the MCAS or in your math, science, or English class? The SASS program has begun again. The free program offers tutoring, MCAS prep, and a plethora of other help.
SASS helps students meet Commonwealth guidelines and provides the opportunity to earn 2.5 credits if all of the program’s requirements are met.
The program runs after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with three phases: math and science tutoring from December 2, 2008 to January 29, 2009; English, math and science tutoring from February 3 to March 26; and, last but not least, English, math and science tutoring from April 7 to June 9.
Mr. Flynn, the director of the program, says that the second and third phases are still open to students, especially in English. If you think that SASS would benefit you, you can speak to Mrs. Freitas in room 121 or Mr. Flynn in room 212. Students and staff alike are excited about SASS and its benefits.
“[SASS] is successful for students who participate regularly,” said math department chair and lead math tutor to the program, Ms. Mars. “It’s not just MCAS prep; it’s teaching and working with organization and study skills. It’s homework help and it’s [also] a small group setting, which is nice,’ said  Ms. Mars. She added that students not participating in SASS can still come for extra help after school.
“[SASS] will help many people. Not only if they need help on MCAS, but if they need help in the class as well. It’s really helping me,” tenth grader, Rachel Marzelli, said with a smile.
Students who participate actively, like Rachel does, have found that they are doing better and understanding more in their classes.
Another tenth grader, Lashay Francis, said that the staff is very kind and helpful. Teachers and administrators want students to do well and this shows in what they do for the students.
SASS is another way for the staff at WHS to demonstrate that they care and that they want the students to succeed.
