Field hockey in Watertown has been a huge success for a long time, especially at the middle school. With about 30 girls on the team this year, they were ready to rise to the occasion and be better than ever.
The team’s first game was held at Sudbury Middle School on Sept. 24. Watertown beat Sudbury, 4-1, and the team did great, especially Alexis Catsoulis on defense and Sydney Poulin in the midfield. The goals were scored by Kourtney Kennedy, Gabby Venezia, and Aurora Fidler, who scored twice.
Many of the new sixth-graders were very excited and happy to be on the team.
“Field hockey is going to be great and I can’t wait for the rest of the season.” said sixth-grader Shannon Hughes after the first game.
Gabby was also feeling the same way.
“I’m really looking forward to the season and I’m excited to start playing in more games. I think we’re off to a good start.”
The team had leaders and captains that kept the group together and were held responsible. The captains were Kourtney Kennedy and Olivia Venezia, and the cocaptains were Madelyn Leitner and Jonna Kennedy.
The captains weren’t the only ones that were great for the team, but also the coaches, Leah Zaino and Ashley English.
They always pushed the girls to try their best and to do things that they never thought they could do.
Madelyn is a competitive player on the WMS field hockey team, and she sure has talent. She was asked about her favorite thing about the team.
“We all bond,’’ she said. “We’re one big family.”
There is agreement there, as the players act like they are all sisters.
