The Watertown Middle School chorus wants to compete at the Music in the Parks Festival in the spring, singing and jamming out with chorus teacher Abby Casey, but it needs some financial help.
The competition will once again be held at Six Flags New England in Agawam, and there are currently about 50 members of the WMS chorus.
Music in the Parks, according to its website, is a one- or two-day festival for chorus, orchestra, and band groups held annually across the United States. Music groups perform for judges who rate the groups in the morning, and then the performers spend the day at an amusement park.
According to Mrs. Casey’s estimate, it will cost about $65 per student to attend.
This year, vocalists of all grades are being featured and solos are being handed out. Members of the chorus go over each of these songs about twice a class and have to audition for the solos.
Hakeem A., a chorus member for two years, was asked about his favorite part of chorus.
“Everything!” he said. “I love to sing because it’s my hobby and passion. It’s a lot of fun!”
His advice to kids thinking about joining? “It’s really fun and you will enjoy it every second you're there and you won’t regret it!”
He was asked if he ever gets nervous about singing in front of a crowd, and how does he get rid of the nerves.
“I don’t always get nervous about singing to large groups,’’ he said, “but when I do, I just stare at Mrs. Casey and it makes me feel like I’m back in the chorus room.''
