Video games score well
in WMS math department
By FRANKIE H.

When you think of video games, PlayStations, Wiis, and Xboxes, you think of kids. But even adults play video games -- and some of those adults are your kids’ teachers.
Both seventh-grade math teachers at Watertown Middle School, Phil Martin and Phil Oates, play video games.
Mr. Martin has a PlayStation 3 and likes to play with his friends online. He says that before he plays with other people, he plays alone to get used to the game so he doesn’t stink when he plays with his friends. The types of games that Mr. Martin plays are sports and shooting, and he said his favorite game of all time is “Zelda.”
“I think that video games are a great way to spend time,’’ Mr. Martin said, “but there needs to be a balance of time you spend outside and playing video games.”
Mr. Oates has an Xbox 360 and likes to play “Call of Duty” and hockey games. He said he won the Madden tournament on PlayStation 2 and beat the champion for Madden on the Xbox 360.
The controllers for the Xbox are his favorite because they're big and he has big hands.
Mr. Oates is friends online with teachers from WMS and other schools. He said he will play online with friends or just play alone.
He also has a Wii, but he said he doesn’t use it that much. He used to play a lot, but he said, “It’s hard to play when you have a baby in the house.”
