The Watertown Middle School PTO is holding its next Bags2School fund-raiser on Thursday, Feb. 28, at WMS. Folks can donate gently used clothes, shoes, bags, purses, belts, stuffed animals, draperies, bedding, and textiles and the PTO will receive cash for every pound donated. Enjoy the 2013 Watertown Music Fest
The second annual Watertown Music Fest will be held Friday, March 1, from 6-10 p.m. at Watertown Middle School. More than 50 performances -- featuring jazz, rock, folk, classical in solos, duos, and groups -- by professionals and students will be held at four locations throughout WMS as part of a fund-raising event for the Friends of Watertown Music. There will also be an instrument “petting zoo,” as well as a pizza and a bake sale. Suggested donation is $8 per person, $25 for a family. For information, go to hellowatertownmusic@gmail.com.
Sportswriting contest open for students
The ninth annual Will McDonough Writing Contest is accepting entries from local students from fourth grade up through 12th grade. Students can write fiction or nonfiction, or on a general topic, or choose from five writing prompts, and will compete in one of four divisions: Grades 4-5 (300 words max.), Grades 6-8 (500 words max.), Grades 9-10 (600 words max.), and Grades 11-12 (700 words max.). Watertown’s Katie Carlson (2011) and Margaret Antonellis (2012) have won in the Grade 12 division the last two years. The contest is presented by the Sports Museum at TD Garden. The deadline for entries is March 19, 2013. For information and judging criteria, go to the Sports Museum’s website at http://sportsmuseum.org/education/will-mcdonough-writing-contest.aspx.
Pennies for Patients drive begins
The Pennies for Patients drive has begun at Watertown Middle School. This is the 10th year that WMS is raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and its quest to find cures for blood cancers. The drive, which features unique and fun fund-raising opportunities big and small, will go until March 18. Last year, WMS raised a school-record $29,372.94 -- the third-highest total in the country out of more than 28,000 participating schools. Checks should be made payable to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. For questions, to make a donation, or to request a donation box for a business, contact Eleanor Donato at eleanor.donato@watertown.k12.ma.us.
