Do you have any spare change in your pockets? Well, you can help Watertown Middle School and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by donating some spare change that you may find laying around your house, or any amount that you choose, to the Pennies for Patients drive to help find a cure for blood cancers.
Chris Koufos, a student at Watertown Middle School, developed leukemia in the summer of 2007 and lasted until 2009. Chris is a strong kid and is thankful every day.
“Pennies for Patients is a really good fund-raiser and it means a lot to me, because people are donating money to try to help conquer the disease,” he said.
But Chris isn’t the only survivor of cancer at WMS. Stamati Papastamatiou, another student, and Tom Johnson, one of the gym teachers, are both cancer survivors.
The drive, which started Feb. 25, goes through March 18 and each homeroom has a goal of $100. WMS has participated in this program for 10 years and the school community has raised more than $200,000 in total! Last year, WMS raised $29,372.94, the third highest amount of the 28,000 participating schools in the country.
We’re off to a great start!
There have have already been a lot of fund-raisers, including bake sales, the student/faculty basketball game, and math teacher Phil Martin even volunteered to be duct-taped to a wall!
There are even more fun P4P events scheduled for the next few days:
Friday, March 15: Family Skate Night, John A. Ryan Arena, Watertown, 7-8 p.m. $4 per person, $12 for family of four or more. Skate rental available.
    Saturday, March 16: Walk-a-lap-athon, Victory Field track, Watertown, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Sunday, March 17: Rummage Sale, WMS cafeteria, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. All proceeds go to P4P. To donate items, contact Jane Evans at jevans@watertown.k12.ma.us.
Friday, March 22: WMS dance, WMS cafeteria, 7-10 p.m. Dancing under the disco ball in the cafeteria, movies in the auditorium, and games in the gym for WMS students only. Tickets are $6 and go on sale next week.

(To donate to Watertown Middle School’s Pennies for Patients drive, please visit the WMS front office or contact Eleanor Donato at eleanor.donato@watertown.k12.ma.us. Checks must be made payable to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.)
