Our "New" School

We’ve all dreamt of the moment TYWLS of Astoria would finally be finished. Well, the waiting is over because our school is finished! After all the waiting our patience finally paid off. It was worth it because we got amazing results. We finally have a fourth and fifth floor, we have a computer lab, smart boards, science labs, music room, art room, drama/dance room and most importantly a kitchen. In the video, available on this site, you will see a tour of the school and all of our beautiful new rooms. Enjoy our brand new, well at least newly renovated, school.

The first room  we videotaped was the music room. This room has much more space than our music room last year. This helps to provide an easier learning environment. There are new chairs and tables and a new piano. Although not featured on the video we saw that there is a room dedicated to instruments and the room next to it is Ruthie’s office. The room has enough space to practice/rehearse for concerts.

The second room we videotaped was the dance/drama room. This room has hardwood waxed floors. One wall has all mirrors, and on the opposite side there are chairs. In the corner there is a room with brown lockers. The chairs are organized to look like an audience for the performer.

The third set of rooms we videotaped was our high tech science labs. Once you walk into the labs you see high chairs and tables equipped with sophisticated  technology that will help advance our knowledge in science. As you’ve seen in the video, we have two labs. The first lab we videotaped was room 511. This room has a fridge, smart board, dishwasher, gas faucets, etc. This room is larger than the other lab. The second lab we videotaped was room 513. This room is smaller than the other lab but it’s big enough for just a class. This lab is much simpler, but is still useful.

The fourth room we videotaped was the computer lab where we hold our Phoenix  meetings. The room is classroom sized, which helps whenever a teacher needs to use the computers for instruction. The addition of this room has provided us with brand new Dell desktops. This time we have no problems, unlike with the laptop carts that rarely had Internet connection. Anytime a teacher needs to use the computers to teach a class, she can show the students each step on the smart board. We have dividers in the classroom that make it possible for two groups to able to work without disturbing each other.

The last room we videotaped was our amazing, new cafeteria. Our cafeteria has improved massively. For one, we have an actual kitchen. There are many more workers and space and best of all FRESH FOOD! We have two offerings of lunch and a salad bar filled with many varieties. With additional workers, they will be able to make more progress. Instead of those sporks we used, we now have actual eating utensils. The kitchen is much more organized and that helps when we’re hungry! Another improvement is that we don’t just have milk as a beverage, we also have the choice of drinking either water or lemon water. We think that this renovation will help our health and academic performance in school.

The new offices aren’t on this video, but they are big and bright. “I LOVE that we have big, beautiful, bright classrooms and offices,” said Laura Mitchell, our principal. Our school has evolved in many ways and now with the newly done renovations we can enjoy and learn in a more comfortable learning environment. “I LOVE that we were lucky enough to be given the funding to create a school that is state of the art with computers in every classroom, wireless connections, a full service kitchen with delicious food options, studio and music rooms and so much more,” said Laura Mitchell, and with this we conclude our tour of our newly renovated school.
