The Girls Track Team, after winning a few meets during the indoor season,
are training hard for the outdoor season which opened a week ago at Randall
Stadium. The girls have not competed in any outdoor meet.
They had a very good indoor season. Last January, the girls won the 4 X 200
relay in Connecticut with Aiesha Dinall, Latoya Hart, Whitney Cole, and Shuntone
Pricher doing the school proud with the victory.
The Girls Track is coached by Ms. Jackie Rodrigues-Smith who has high praises
for her team.
She thanked the Freshmen girls for an outstanding job in Connecticut noting it
was the first time the young Freshmen girls went away for a track meet. Ms.
Rodriguez Smith also thanked the Juniors and Seniors. She said “all the girls
practiced real hard to victory in the indoor season. They trained really hard
for several indoor meets. I had faith in them because they showed tremendous
potential from the start of the school year”.
Rodrigues-Smith had high praises for Shuntone Pricher noting how she excelled at
the 55 meters dash. Shuntone ran with a time of 7.91 seconds. She ran 7.83
seconds in the trials, making it back to the finals with the second fastest time
of 7.83 seconds. She ended the finals with a time of 7.68 seconds.
Aiesha Dinall also ran well. She put in a beautiful performance in the 200 M
placing third overall.
Latoya Hart ran an individual 400 M run and defeated each runner in her heat.
She placed first and won it all.
Janet Williams ran a terrific 800 M at her best and placed 5th. overall.
Coach Rodrigues-Smith said she wants her girls to keep trying. “I’ll continue
to give them support and encouragement so they can become better athletes. They
make me, the team and the school proud with their stellar performances”.
Under Ms. Rodrigues-Smith, the team did well last year. It scored successes
among Sophomore runners last indoor season, ending a drought in wins in several
years. During the Spring break last year, the girls also won the 4 X 100 meters
King Relay at Icahn Stadium in Manhattan. These are unprecedented victories for
the team.
Aiesha Dinall, Shuntone Pricher, Whitney Cole, and Latoya Hart are a terrific
combination winning meets last year.
It was a good year so far for the Girls Team last year and this year in the
indoor meets. It is hoped the Girls Track will grow later this season.
