During the Beijing Olympics in 2008, Americans all over the country were provided with many reasons to be proud of the athletes that represented their nation. Shawn Johnson, an extremely talented gymnast, was one of these reasons. She gave off a sort of girl-next-door feeling that allowed people all over the country to cheer her on. And it worked too, as she won three silver medals and one gold.
Johnson's future in the Olympics was bright, as she was only 16 at the time. However, in 2010 Johnson seriously injured her knee while on a skiing trip. The past two years have been spent trying to recover and prepare for the games in London this year. Unfortunately, Johnson has recently announced her retirement as an Olympic athlete. Although she is overwhelmed with the decision, Johnson realized she is unable to train with the condition of her knee. In the upcoming weeks, we will begin to see new athletes discover their places in Olympic sports, but will also never forget the remarkable performances and achievements of Shawn Johnson.
