Absent teachers on exam day cause aggravation for students

It’s approximately 7:45 in the
morning. Students make their
way to their classes, nervous
about taking their exams. They
find a disappointing surprise
as they enter their classrooms.
Their most significant lifeline,
their teacher, is missing in action.
Panic sets in.
Many students experienced
this problem during second trimester
exams. Students felt they
could have done better on some
exams if their teacher had been
there for support and questions.
“There were multiple questions
on the exam that I would
have asked my teacher about if
she had been there, but I just
gave them my best guess and
moved on,” says Nicole Wahmhoff
‘14.
Other students were upset
because their teacher’s absence
caused their grade to suffer.
“I ended up with an 89 percent
in a class which is frustrating,”
says Emily Hochstedler
‘14.
Some teachers were very con-
siderate and attempted to make
things fair between their classes.
“Mrs. Kohn was gone for her
fifth hour’s exam so she wouldn’t
let my second hour class ask
her any questions either,” says
Andersen Cole ‘12. “I attempted
to go up and ask her something,
but she just waved me away back
to my desk.”
On the flip side, some students
think people used their
teacher’s absence as an excuse.
“I think a lot of kids used it
as an excuse of why they didn’t
do well because they were more
focused on what questions they
couldn’t answer, then actually
trying to work through it,” says
Molly Meddock ‘12.
Everyone can relate to those
times when something comes
up and one can’t be present at
something.
Of course students appreciate
everything their teachers do for
them, but they just wish they
wouldn’t have been gone on
their exam day. Those students
who take their grades seriously
are hoping to see more familiar
faces on the final set of exams.
