As we have, well...heard, they have started construction on the new science wing. Maybe you heard about it from your friends, your parents chatting about it, or the Hastings Tribune.
Or you may be like the German, business and Mrs. Choquette's English students and have literally heard and felt the construction taking place during class time. Any way you may have heard about it, the project is well underway.
The Tiger Cub is in complete support of the new science wing. It is a wonderful idea, and we are excited about the new space.
What we aren't so excited about is the number of trees that were taken down in the process of building the new wing. As of now, the total number of trees actually taken down is six, according to, Trent Kelly, Director of Technology.
As a staff, we understand that in order to improve things at our school, we are going to have to lose or change others. There are some people who are very upset about the situation, one being business teacher Gwen Davidson.
"I am thrilled, absolutely thrilled, that they have begun building the new science wing. It is long over due; it is a wonderful idea and the science teachers deserve it. But I am very upset about the number of trees that were taken down. I think the science wing would have worked just as well, if not better on the other side of the school. If it was over there, there would have been no trees taken out," Davidson said.
After speaking with Kelly, the Tiger Cub has been assured that Hastings Public Schools plans on planting six new trees in different areas on the high school ground. The Tiger Cub staff encourages the administration to follow through on this, regardless of how it is done, or where they will reside. As a staff, we are also offering our help to plant trees. We believe it would be a great school bonding activity to have a planting day that all students can take part in. If a few different school organizations pitched in their efforts to help plant these new trees, this planting day could be a more memorable experience for all. One idea the Tiger Cub staff had, was to have six different school organization each help plant a tree, or donate a tree to be planted
What happened was not right, and we are more than willing to help the cause. The environment of our school is not only important internally, but externally.
