In the past couple of months, the Upper Perkiomen High School has unveiled a new method for delivering the daily morning announcements. Instead of one of the principals delivering the announcements over the PA system, the messages needed to be given to students and staff are now being brought to each and every classroom courtesy of UPTV. There has been mixed feelings regarding the change in the morning routine. While most students have expressed a great liking toward the news station, teachers have complained that the news segment takes up too much time, cutting into their class periods. However, the complaint is quite ridiculous. The UPTV news is an outstanding technological advancement for our high school, as most other schools also run their own news station. Each daily newscast runs only about five to seven minutes, a minuscule time frame. A high school newscast is one more way for the student body to connect with each other, as they are able to watch their peers succeed in high school athletic events, theater productions, and other school functions through recorded footage. UPTV also makes the morning announcements much more entertaining, which therefore helps most students to pay attention to important information that they need to know. Instead of only hearing the announcements over the PA, which many times is talked over anyway, classes are able to concentrate on their SMART boards each morning and watch the school news be delivered by high school students. With the help of different graphics, fonts, and video footage, UPTV is much more amusing and enjoyable for both staff and students. Also, by having a school news station, our school is now able to give greater opportunities to those students who want to pursue a career in fields such as TV and radio and broadcast journalism. All in all, there is really nothing to complain about when it comes to having a school newscast. It turns the daily announcements into something that the students look forward to each morning. It’s not like the seven minutes is wasted on unimportant information. UPTV broadcasts bulletins that must be heard by students, and therefore teachers should have no reason to complain. continued from page 2
