In the past ten years the courses offered at Arkadelphia High school have changed dramatically. Back then, the popular courses included traveling tourism, word processing, computer applications, home economics and carpentry. Now, the school is more focused on courses that prepare you for college and focus on skills that you need to excel in a successful career.
Last year Arkadelphia introduced a new course, Aviation. The course was designed to get students more interested in careers that are in high demand and pay well. In Aviation I students learn about the history of aviation and how it has grown in the past one hundred years. They are also taught how the engines work, aircraft design and are involved in many projects. They also learn about what it takes to become a pilot. Students are pushed to focus on college since it is a college level class. Students in the class learn many skills that also relate to real life situations.
In aviation II students learn more in depth of what they learned last year. Its just like any other course, the students have homework, class assignments, tests and projects. In aviation II some of the chapters consist of Anti Icing and Deicing equipment, Aeronautical charts, Airspace and Airport classes, and also sources of airport data.
The aviation class doesn't just prepare you to be a pilot. There are many careers that you can pursue by taking aviation. You could go to college to be an air traffic controller, plane maintenance and being anything from a private pilot to a commercial pilot. It is very simple and spread out. You learn a little bit of everything in the course. This has been a good investment in Arkadelphia's high school courses. Since Henderson is the closest flight school in Arkansas this also encourages students to go to Henderson and ultimately giving back to the community.
Hopefully, in the next ten years the aviation program will grow and more students will be more interested in the program.
