In the Spring Semester a new College Now course will be offered to Cardozo students. The course is called Critical Issues in Health Education.

The idea of this course was brought up by Cardozo health teacher Ms. Ricki Garfield. Garfield pitched the idea to Principal Hallman at the beginning of the school year, and soon after, the course was approved. The class will meet Monday afternoons for one hour and forty minutes at the end of the school day.

“The great thing about this course is that students will earn two college credits as well as one high school elective credit,” said Garfield. In order to take this course you must have taken health and passed health. Therefore, like all College Now courses, it is only offered to junior and seniors.

Critical Issues in Health Education is a course of study where students will have an opportunity to research and discuss a variety of health related topics, such as mental health, addictions and dependencies, exercise, diet, human sexuality, major diseases, and their relation to morbidity and longevity.

The college credits earned in this course are transferable to various schools across the country, as well as to all of the New York City and State colleges and universities.

You must check with the college of your choice to see if these credits are transferable. For individual requirements in order to take this course, Garfield advises students to speak with her as well as to their guidance counselor. “This course will offer a fun, open environment where the students set the tone of the room,” says Garfield. “There is a lot of valuable information that you can learn and share that will apply to your daily life and well being. What a great way to earn both high school and college credits and it’s free!” Garfield states enthusiastically.

If you are interested in taking this course sign up soon, because seating is limited.
