Over the past years home football and basketball games have usually been well attended, this year included. However, school spirit doesn’t seem to be quite as high as it used to be. It doesn’t seem to be that everyone is there to support their team and to cheer loudly for them.
This isn’t to say that no one cheers ever. There is still cheering, lead by loud cheerers, but it still doesn’t seem to be quite the same.
What I have realized is that almost all of these cheers are started or lead by girls of the senior class. Our Senior boys don’t lead, but they do still cheer. Is this because we have so many boys that play the sports that we usually cheer for? This could be a contributing factor, but I believe that it is a lack of school spirit. We haven’t had as many “color” or “theme” games as we usually do (what happened to the beach games?). These attract more people to come to games and to participate. Some come just to look at everyone else looking goofy, but hey, they’re there, aren’t they? That makes them inclined to cheer.
Whenever I go to a game, it seems to be people standing in the student section are only half paying attention to the game. Many people are texting (ahem, freshmen) or just sitting there while everyone else around them is standing up (more freshmen ahem). The other half of the student section is actually cheering. Imagine if the whole section was cheering. Now that would pump up the basketball team.
I understand that many people come to these events because their friends are there. This is a good reason to come and while you’re there you may as well cheer on our Warriors and have a good time.
I really hope we support not only our teams by coming to these events, but also supporting and representing our school. It really isn’t cool when you are at a home game and the opposing team has more fans than you. It’s disappointing. We have to remember that our cheering does help our team. It motivates them and it feels good to have someone cheer for you.
So grab a friend (or two) and hang out after school. Go downtown and grab some food, then come back and support your Warrior sports teams!
