Summer band is one of the most exhausting things a band member ever participates in. There are countless hours of marching and playing instruments.
The steps are hard to learn and the music is even harder. The uniforms weigh about ten pounds and are extremly hot, especially at the end of the parades.
It is easy to compare football and basketball to band, as they both require a lot of physical activity and stamina. In marching band, there is no bench or sideline.
A coach can pull a member out too if one is tired or has reached his or her limit.
Some parades can last a mile or more with no breaks at all. When the temperature gets too high, a marcher almost cooks in the uniform.
This year the Warrior Band is traveling to Calgary, Canada for the Calgary Stampede. This is a very well-known parade in the competition world. It is the 100th Anniversary Parade of the Calgary Stampede.
In addition to learning a street routine, which is what the band does as it moves up the street in a parade, members also have to learn a field show.
Performing a field show in the Saddledome is a traditional part of the Stampede. The trip will last two weeks starting in the beginning of July.
Every part of the band, from instruments to the flags, rifles, and honor guard will be on their toes, ready to amaze the Canadians and the Americans who watch their performance.
