Comparing Twilight to Harry Potter is like comparing Taylor Swift to Rebecca Black; both attract millions of fans, but the range is so unique and different.
Twilight is a timeless tale of love. It brings back a very old-fashioned, idealized, almost fairytale-like depiction of romance that hasn’t been seen in literature for a long time. Long before Stephenie Meyer wrote the Twilight series, stories were being told of girls falling in love with vampires and having forbidden loves. That is nothing new. The aspect of love is a natural topic that allows people to instantly connect.
Today, the same kids who dreamed of going to elementary school at Hogwarts now dream of going to high school in Forks. Twilight seems to touch a deeper nerve. Behind the obsession with vampirish good looks, Twilight grabs at a stray chord in the heart to play something so vivid and haunting that girls won't let go.
Twilight has given an entire generation a mental picture of what it looks like to choose heroism over fear, true greatness over superficial power, and love over lust and exploitation.
I am neither a die-hard Twilight fan nor a Harry Potter-obsessed fan, but after reading both series, I feel that Twilight is more relatable and depicts something girls want to live, not just read about.
I could not easily get past the first Harry Potter book to save my life. Maybe it was because I couldn’t picture myself flying on a broomstick or casting magical spells. Twilight was a different story. I couldn’t put the books down. I could put myself in Bella’s shoes, and I easily understood her struggles.
It is more realistic to fall in love with the two guys that compete for Bella Swan. Both are attractive, strong, and protective. They only want the best for her and are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve love.
Harry Potter, on the other hand, is about a geeky-looking guy that can’t stand up for himself without the help of his friends. Now, which would you rather have? Not a tough decision.
Harry Potter also seems to live in the past. He spends his youth obsessed with avenging the death of his parents by killing their murderer. Bella and Edward spend their time together thinking about their future. No one wants a “momma’s boy” who openly expresses all the baggage with which he comes. That’s something you keep to yourself, no matter how upsetting.
Aside from the vampire and werewolf theme, Twilight actually takes place in a real town with up-to-date, realistic equipment, such as cell phones. I'm sorry, but I just can't picture myself on a flying car or a magical train, eating chocolate-covered frogs, headed to a non-existent magical school to ride broomsticks and cast magical spells. If you are wishing to read and fall in love with a story you can actually relate to, I recommend Twilight over Harry Potter.
