There may be several elementary schools in Fort Dodge but there is one that rises above the rest. Literally. Standing three stories high, Duncombe Elementary School is the tallest elementary school in town. It is also the oldest. This year, in fact, marks its 100th anniversary—construction began in 1912 when the school board decided the northeast part of the city needed a school building. Although Duncombe was originally on the outskirts of town with only a few houses to the north and east, Fort Dodge eventually grew around it, making the site a rather convenient location. The building has grown as well; an east wing was added in 1950, advancing the classrooms from 8 to 21. Today, Duncombe is a home away from home for kindergarteners through 4th graders but at one time it held 7th and 8th graders. Duncombe has changed significantly over the years but one thing that will surely remain constant is the amazing memories made within its hallowed halls.
