At International Studies Learning Center the school shares a nurse with South East High School. If a student is feeling ill they have to cross the field to the South East campus where the nurse’s office is located.
“We need a nurse, what happens if someone gets a sprained knee? They would have to go all the way to South East High School,” Luis Pelayo said.
“In case of emergencies we have taken the students to the nurse on wheelchairs or called the ambulance,” Ms. Aguilar explained.
Even if International Studies Learning Center does not have a nurse at the campus they are prepared for emergencies.
Students believe that a school nurse is necessary for emergencies. To go all the way to South East’s nurse is too much of a hassle if they are sick.
“I would say it would be better to get picked up out of school early instead of going to South East’s nurse. My parents will take care of me, and they will attend me faster, than to wait in the South East nurse’s office,” Luis Pelayo said.
Not having a school nurse at the school affects the student’s education, because if they are not feeling well they end up missing class.
“Student should be going to the nurse if they feel sick and the nurse will decide if the students can go home,” Ms. Escobar expressed.
Instead of calling home when feeling sick, students should go to the nurse first and then students may be allowed to go home.
“We pay South East so we can use their nurse. The reason why we don’t have one in our campus is because we have too few students,“ Ms. Escobar adds.
ISLC is too small to have their own nurse. Even though the nurse is in the South East campus she is also our nurse.
