Numerous cardboard boxes lined the campus of Dickinson College's campus this past weekend for the annual Night Without a Home Event; however, several boxes were absent.
This year several of Carlisle High School’s student clubs did not participate in this event. This group includes Student Council and Sophomore Class Council.
“Our expectations of the experience [Night Without a Home] didn’t align with the organizers expectations…they wanted [participants] to experience what being homeless was like and our biggest priority was raising money and awareness,” said Matt Fahnestock, English teacher and advisor of Student Council.
Member of Student Council sophomore Nadia Khan said, “So many members were disappointed and [dis]interested with how strict the organizers of the event got.”
On the other hand sophomore class council had a different reason for not participating.
“We only had three students participate last year…it was the lack of participation that led us to not take part this year,” said Shellee Mumma, English teacher and co-advisor of sophomore class council.
Sophomore class president Nick Manning remarked that he was disappointed he would not be participating in the event and had looked forward to raising awareness about the homeless.
Carlisle High School was still represented at this event by clubs such as senior class council and the Interact club. Money raised at Night Without a Home will benefit Safe Harbour.
