Should Technology Be Allowed In School?
The iPad is just one example of an electronic device that is not allowed in school. - Nate Towery

Why is it that students aren’t allowed to use their iPads, Nooks, Laptops, or MP3 players in school?

Imagine you’re sitting in class. All the computers are taken, so you pull out your laptop and begin typing. Then all of a sudden the principal comes over and tells you to put it away. If you’re doing school work and the teacher is not against it, why do you have to put it away?
Another example is study hall. You have nothing to do so you whip out your MP3 player and listen to some music. Your teacher says you cannot have it out even though you’re not disturbing anyone.
The rule stating that students cannot use their personal technology in school is ludicrous. It is the 21st century and the age of technology. I believe that students should be able to use their electronic devices for educational purposes. Even though there are strict rules against cell phones, countless students still use them while in school. Banishing these types of devices is only turning out to be a useless effort.

Heather Shumaker, the head librarian of Carlisle High School, said, “With proper guidelines and well known expectations, I believe students should be permitted to bring personal devices [iPads, Laptops, eReaders, MP3s] to be used in study halls, library, and certain classes with teacher permission.”
On the other end of the spectrum, if students were allowed to use electronically devices in school, they might take the rule for granted and use it for personal priorities.
Senior Trevor Steinour thinks students would use them for “cheating.”

If students could show that they were responsible enough to not use their devices when asked to and for education purposes only, I believe that the school would be more lenient, especially if there is no work to be done and the electronics don’t disturb the other students.

With technology becoming more advanced and impacting our lives, students could benefit if they were able to use their personal electronic devices in school.
