San Juan Hills High School, as well as San Clemente High School and other schools in the Capistrano Unified School District have made a rule banning all students, any grade, from going to their cars during school hours. Despite the fact that the school administration as well as proctors think it is more safe to do so, they have not necessarily taken into consideration the advantages of going to your car during school hours and the reasons as to why students would feel the need to do so.
Having the responsibility of assuring that students at school are safe at all times is a difficult job for the Principal and staff members. Therefore, it is easy to understand why the rule has been made when it comes to the security of the students attending San Juan Hills. However, what the staff does not realize is that there are actual benefits that come along with being able to go to your car during school hours.
As sophomores, juniors, and seniors in high school, many people eventually come to find that sooner or later, the vehicle you drive to school has its way of turning into a mobile backpack. Additionally, it finds its way of replacing the wallet you previously owned, or in a girl’s case, the need for a closet, by holding every possible change for an outfit in its trunk.
There are many reasons as to why cars should be accessible during school hours. All students, no matter what grade, are at some point in time assigned and required to complete thorough projects, for example, varying poster projects, physics catapults, and chemistry rockets.
Though teachers generally offer their classroom to students during the morning, lunch, and after school hours to store their projects, we have all either seen or experienced projects getting ruined by other people, and even projects getting stolen by other classmates. Instead, students should have the accessibility of their cars to go to, even if it is only for something as simple as keeping projects in them until class.
Students who do not bring lunch to school and are not signed up with a lunch account are expected to bring money with them to purchase a lunch. That being said, many students have found it much more convenient to be able to leave their money in their car where it is safe and to get it at lunchtime when it is needed.
“I didn’t get to eat at lunch a couple weeks ago. I forgot my money for lunch in my car one morning but when I went to go get it at lunch the proctors wouldn’t let me have access to my car” says Azi Safavi.
Despite the benefits of full accessibility, even just simple regulations on going to your car during school hours would please the students. Limitations could be set on the rule such as only being able to have access to your car before school, after school, and at lunch, rather than just before and after school. That way students are not overwhelmed with the thought of forgetting their money or their phone or a project in the car before school and not having access to it for the rest of the day.
