From Hamburg, Germany to the Music City: How One Teen Settles 5,000 Miles From Home

If you are a teen in the United States, once in your life you’ve probably have said to yourself or your parents “GOD! I wish I could just get away from home!”, and most often, that wish will not be granted…unless you are a foreign exchange student. Katharina Worczinzski, Overton junior, gets to have the opportunity to be 5,000 miles away from her native Germany to explore the many wonders of the United States, including the one and only Nashville, Tennessee.

Living so far away from home is not easy, especially making new friends in a new place or a new country. “At first, it was hard to make friends, but I joined as many clubs as I could to try and interact with others and so far it has worked,” said Worczinski, “I’ve also being involved in band.” Back in Germany, Katharina received private flute lessons but never performed with a real band until her visit to the states. “It’s exciting being able to play in a band since we don’t have one in my school.”

As she continues to revitalize her social life in the states, she spends most of her time hanging out with friends including with her boyfriend who attends David Lipscomb High School in Nashville. “I’ve been to Gaylord Opryland and it was fun. Most of this city is fun and uplifting.” She says her home town of Hamburg is not as open and friendly as Nashville and it’s the one thing that she says she loves about this town.

She continues to try to have good grades even though her grades at Overton won’t affect her current graduation plan back in Germany. “I still need good grades because if I don’t, my foreign exchange agency will take me back home. But so far, that is not a problem” Worczinski says happily.

From the German food she misses so to her parents who she wishes to see soon, Germany will always be Katharina’s home. “I’ll probably stay in Germany after I graduate, but maybe I’ll come back and visit one day.” It’s obvious being 5,000 miles away from home can be a bit hard, but for now, our German friend from Hamburg is calling Overton home.
