The Rider Times staff recently read an article about conformity from the New York Times called, "Are You Popular, Quirky or Conformist?" Here are some of our reactions to the concept of conformity in schools.

by Kayonna Jones

Conformity is everywhere, especially in high schools. Nowadays the most popular trend is teen pregnancy. A lot of teen girls are being pressured to have babies or just want to fit in with their friends who already have a baby. It's very hard to see such young girls throw their lives away just for bragging rights. All they're doing is becoming another statistic instead of embracing their individuality. It might seem hard being different in high school but with hard work comes great rewards.

In the article "Are You Popular, Quirky or Conformist" the author talks about the different cultures in school. The article mentions another New York Times article about Ms. Robbins and they gave her opinion on the different cultures in school. She basically said that just because you do an activity at school that doesn't make you popular. Ms. Robbins gave a definition to the word "popular" and it was someone who has the combination of three things: visibility, influence and recongnizability. Those words mean that people know you and like you. The article also says that a lot of people are trying to do what you do and I agree with that. In school these days people will do anything to get accepted into a group. Sometimes people just need to be themselves.

I think that Roosevelt's school culture shows conformity because a lot of people here follow each other. I think that the main thing that people in this school follows is religion. I think that a lot of people try to be Muslim when they are not. They are not true Muslims because they smoke, they disrespect females and do not cover up like they are supposed to be. The people who are pretending to be Muslims do it because maybe they are afraid they will get picked on. This type of conformity is a problem.
