On Friday, May 11, the Cedar Ridge track team finished its
season with an outstanding performance at the 2A state track meet at North
Carolina A&T University. The women’s team placed ninth overall in the state,
and the men’s team won first place overall.
“The
team had a remarkable season,” said Track Coach Jennifer Pepin. “The state meet
could not have gone any better. It was the dream ending to an already amazing
season.”
Among
the state champions were senior Morgan Lau for discus, junior AJ Tucker for the
1600 meter run, junior Ethan Smith for pole vault, and junior Cameron Cooper
for the 200 meter dash. Lau broke the school record for discus back in March,
she but made a new record at the state meet, throwing 112 feet, 3 inches.
“The coaching staff was tremendous and I look
forward to working with Coach Faucette, Coach Smith, and Coach Wilkerson
again,” said Pepin. “I look forward to working with all the athletes
again. And with so many returning athletes, a repeat state championship
would be sweet!”
Despite several seniors leaving,
the team still has three state champions and many other strong athletes
returning. Congratulations to all of the Cedar Ridge athletes and to the men’s
team for finishing the season as state champions.
