Bob Marley is a world-famous reggae musician. The movie Marley, which released last weekend, is
great evidence of how Bob Marley made it from unknown to a world-recognized
name.
I like Bob Marley for the vibe of the music, the message of the lyrics,
and the multiple meanings each song has. I think too many people convince
themselves they are fans because they know Marley as a worldwide icon for
marijuana, but they don't know more than a few songs and most of them happen to
be from the album Legend. This is his
most popular and well know album, containing his most popular songs.
The songs in the album were recorded from 1972, until Robert Nesta
Marley died in 1981. However most of the songs were recorded in 1977. The album
was released in 1984, three years after Bob's death. Some of the most popular
songs on the album are "One love", "Is this Love", and
"No Woman, No Cry".
One of my two favorite songs on the album is "Waiting In Vain,"
which was a love song written for the girl of his dreams, Cindy Breakspeare,
Miss World of 1976. Evidently, Marley didn't have to wait in vain too long
because he and Breakspeare eventually became boyfriend and girlfriend, and the
parents of modern-day reggae artist Damian Marley.
My second favorite song on the
album is "Stir It Up", mostly for the relaxing vibe, but the song is
another love song probably written for Breakspeare as well. This song, like
many others, contains many metaphors and symbolic phrases that refer simply to
sex.
I think this album was very well-written,
however, I still think that some of Marley’s less-played songs should have made
it to this album also. Bob Marley recorded so many songs, and they all hold
such a great amount of power and meaning that it’s difficult to find the best.
I think there’s a difference
between listening to a song, or truly LISTENING to it, and hearing the lyrics
and the meaning of the song. All of Bob Marley’s songs have their own meaning
to him, and represent something that happened to him, which is why he wrote
them in the first place.
I think the reason why the songs
on Legend made it on the album is
because they are the simplest to understand and are the most well-known. It’s
saddening to know that not only an outstanding musician, but also a powerful,
loving person, with positive beliefs, had his life surprisingly cut short by
complications with a melanoma in his toe, which later spread into lung and
brain, because he refused to get an amputation that would prevent him from
dancing and would go against his religion.
I think the album Legend proves that Bob Marley really is
a legend.
