62-33 WAS the final score that ended the season forthe Girls’ Varsity Basketball team.
With 5 less wins than hernormal average the 3 seasons before the 2009-2010 season, Coach Diana Stein was able to take the Spirits’ to the 2nd round of the Division B playoffs.

In a decisive 39 to 34 defeat in the 1st round, the Spirits’ beat Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy. With Tiana Freeman and Tiffany McNally grabbing 32 of the team’s 53 rebounds and 32 of the team’s 39 points, the Spirits won after being down 11 to 4 in the 1st quarter.

The Spirits playoff hopes were then crushed by the more balanced HS Enviromental Studies in
a 62-33 defeat in which only 4 out of a possible 8 players scored compared to 8 out of 11 for
HS Enviromental Studies. The Spirits would also lose their best rebounder, Tiana Mc Nally. She
graduated and took her 12.1 rebounds a game with her.

With every ending comes a new beginning. The Spirits have a new clean sheet to either dirty up with losses or polish with wins. With 6 out of the 8 players from last year still in the school, the Spirits are on track to have another double digit win season and playoff appearance with Coach Stein.
Tiana Freeman (a junior now), statistically the Spirits’ best player, is now a junior and has another season of experience under her belt. One player can’t a win championship (See James, LeBron) but they can make a team exciting. Stein and Freeman need more help to take a deeper step into the playoffs.

Can the Spirits’ build a “team” to make a run for it or will it just be another season such as the Cavs, consistently good in the regular season but not when it counts in the playoffs? That is the question for the 2010-2011 Spirits.

The season begins on December 8th, 2010 at 4:30 p.m, when the Spirits take on last season’s undefeated Division foe, Bedford Academy High School. A tough task to ask of the Spirits but, if David took out Goliath, then why not us?
