The field is lit and the emotions on the players' faces show one thing: the desire to win. This particular game will determine the spot the Bears have for district and whether or not they will be able to advance to the playoffs.
The boys varsity soccer team has had an exceptional season. The team has won second place for district and they have won their most recent game against Lockhart, which has placed the Bears in the first round of playoffs.
"Since our loss last year in the first round of playoffs, we have been training from off-season to pre-season and early games this season," head coach Robert Faires said.
The team has looked to the seniors for leadership.
"We still have a lot of work to accomplish our goal, and that’s to win state," senior Anthony Perez said.
Stand out players include leading goal scorers Clayton Raemsch and Yeison Mesa. Strikers include Juan Carmona and Colin Higginbotham.
"Since off season we’ve been working hard and training to be the best that we can be showing people what we have," Carmona said.
Midfielders are Margarito Perez, Anthony Perez, Rico Rubio, Dalton Kelly and Blake Mundine.
"I believe we can win state with the team we have this year, we just need to play our hardest ever game," Kelly said.
Goalkeeper John Fajardo has been given a lot of recognition.
"Our goalkeeper has been invaluable with his saves and restarts to begin our attack," Faires said.
The team hopes to finish a great season this year by winning a state title and growing their skills as well as increasing leadership and unity among each other.
"We have fun, play our hardest and show Bastrop what we are made of," Carmona said.
