Junior Antwuan Davis earned a silver medal in the 100M dash at the State track and field meet at D.K.R. Memorial Stadium in Austin.
“He is a very gifted and talented athlete,” coach Chris Olson said. “We are all very proud of him,”
During the weeks before the meet Davis, trained regularly with his coaches to help better prepare him for State.
“I worked more on technique than anything,” Davis said.
Before the race Davis said that he felt a variety of emotions.
“I was really nervous when I started getting closer to the stadium, but once I was there and started warming up I felt more confident,” Davis said.
The race was neck-and-neck the entire time, and in the final stretch Antwuan ended up losing the race by 1/100 of a second, taking second place.
“I’m just really blessed that I was able to compete and I had a great time,” Davis said.
Davis has hopes of taking the relay teams to State next year as well running in the 100 or 200M again.
“My hopes are that I do well and win State next year,” Davis said.
Davis’s accomplishments have been recognized statewide and nationally. Davis has made a commitment to the University of Texas at Austin as a defensive back. Davis is one of 14 recruits from the class of 2013 around the state. He has also been chosen as one of 400 players nationwide to play in the Army All-American Bowl in January 2013. Also joining him from Bastrop is fellow teammate Paul Whitmill.
“I was so excited about UT," Davis said. "I love the school and atmosphere. I know it will be the best place for me, and I watch the bowl every year, so to be able to play in it will be really fun and an unforgettable experience."
