At-a-glance

All the glitz and glamour and fans still are not Blown Away

After a short break, Carrie Underwood’s fourth studio album Blown Away released May 1 with fourteen tracks that are a decent reflection of Underwood’s talent. Fans may find a few of the tracks worth the money but the rest of the album is just ordinary.

The album opens up with "Good Girl," with the rock country vibe Underwood is known for. It’s a great first single, and it is extremely catchy. The next song is the title track, and as good as it is, it has a very Taylor Swiftesque sound to it. It blurs the lines between country and pop in a very unique way in that the lyrics are very country, but the music and some of the editing are very pop-like.

A personal favorite would be "Two Black Cadillacs." It’s about a man who cheats on two women and how both women find out about it, kill him, and get away with it. It’s such a fun song and, as much as I wish it was slightly faster, her tone throughout the song is perfect for what she is singing about. It just one of those good ole country revenge songs that I really hope gets released as a single.

The album goes downhill from there with a few good tracks in between the very meaningless songs. The album was supposed to be a fun and light album, as stated by Underwood herself, but it just doesn’t work for her. She has so much talent and on all of her previous albums there were songs with substance and this one is mainly made up of love songs that are not all that. Songs that were really disappointing would be "Do You Think about Me," "Forever Changed," "Thank God for Hometowns," and "Cupids got a Shotgun." They are just meaningless and too slow; "Cupids got a Shotgun" may have been a good song had it had better lyrics.

Now not all songs were lousy love songs, "Nobody Ever Told You" talks about how beautiful people are and how sometimes you just need to be told so you know. It’s cute and has a reminiscence of her old songs especially "Crazy Dreams," off of her sophomore album Carnival Ride.

Overall the album was somewhat of a disappointment for me, I like the formula she had on her previous albums it worked well for her. But I admire her for trying something new on this album, on the record as a whole she wrote eight of the fourteen tracks, most of which I did like. It you’re a fan of Underwood, get the album but don’t bother purchasing it if you are not--it won’t really make you a fan.
