From
May to December, the parking lot of James Logan High will be transformed every
Sunday into a flea market for a new reality show titled “Flea Market Wars.”
Starting
Sunday, May 6th, a production crew will be filming from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This
will continue every Sunday through the rest of this year. With only filming
once a week, it will take a month to complete a single episode. The executive
producer Mike Gouvea hand picked the Union City location himself. He is renting
the space from the New Haven Unified School District to put on this new reality
show.
“Flea
Market Wars” has semblance to A&E’s “Storage Wars,” but with several
differences. Every Sunday, a different celebrity guest will attend the flea
market who will pick an item under $20 from five different vendors. Those
purchases will then be appraised of their value at the end of each episode. At
the end of the season, the celebrity guest who made the most profit from their
purchases will receive $50,000 to be given to any charity. Also, the top five
vendors who sold the items of most value will receive $50,000 to split among
the five vendors.
Some
of the producer’s plans are to donate the proceeds to New Haven Unified School District and to help struggling local schools as they face
nearly $11 million in budget cuts. One of the goals for the show is to have the
community get involved in the process and encourage residents to vend and shop
at the weekly flea markets. The flea market is open to the public with vending
spaces selling for approximately $30 per space.
