ARTISTIC TALENT: Students in the classes of art teachers James Wu, Susan Mapp and Sean Clay showcase their work in the May art show. A variety of pictures, drawing and sculptures were stationed out around the school in the halls and in Mapp’s ceramics class. Hard work provided great art. - Joseph Paige
This year Watkins Mill High School held an art show from May 3 to May 5. The entries were comprised of multiple works of art from a large and diverse group of students.
This art show took place in the hallways around the school to give maximum exposure to the participants. Multiple black stands around the school displayed art work that ranged from photos of inanimate objects and drawings of various architectural forms to exciting fantasy creatures.
All the pictures came from students, encompassing all four grades and various levels of experience. The art show was made possible and organized by the art department instructors to showcase the students’ artistic endeavors.
“I was happy with what we displayed,” says photography teacher James Wu. There were a significant amount of photos submitted that were displayed all around the school.
Some of the students didn’t even realize they had work in the show and were pretty excited when they saw it. There were amazing pictures that rival those from professional photographers.
Wu pointed out a few students with extraordinary work. Sophomore Tatiana Harris, junior Mariella Villacorta and senior Angela Niño were mentioned in this group.
Harris had four pictures in the art show. “One of my pieces won third place in a contest I submitted it to,” she said. “I asked Mr. Wu personally to put it in the show.”
Foundations of Art teacher Sean Clay also played a major part in the Art Show. His classes had excellent color and pencil media art pieces.
“I was glad to see that a variety of students wanted to display their work,” Clay said. “Those with multiple pieces clearly demonstrated their experience, patience, and commitment to the arts.”
Clay added,” Hopefully next year as we continue to push our students in understanding that anyone can learn these artistic skills with diligence, the art show will continue to grow and grow.”
