For seven consecutive years, North's cheerleaders
kept their title as national champions by hitting perfect toe touches, landing
difficult flips, and holding flawless stunts.
“I think it's a great accomplishment for the school
and the cheer squad to win Nationals for seven years in a row. It shows
the dedication of the cheerleaders at this school to be the best,” cheer
sponsor teacher Michelle Hopper said.
The cheerleaders practiced for three hours a day,
four days a week and sometimes on the weekends to prepare for the competition.
They flew to Orlando, Florida and competed Jan. 7 & 8.
"It was a lot of hard work, but we pulled
through and got our seventh consecutive national championship win,"
sophomore Anne Marie Gamblin said.
After six consecutive years, winning again this
year put a lot of pressure on the returning cheerleaders who have been to
nationals before. McEvers has won nationals all four years of her high school
career.
"Coming into my freshman year, new to high school
was such a fun, but nerve wracking experience. I was so excited to make the
team and win my first national title with school cheer," McEvers said.
"I always had hoped to come into high school with winning and go out doing
the same thing.”
Following in senior captains footsteps as junior
captain last year, McEvers shadowed Carol Isernhagen learning how to set the
tone for the squad at Nationals.
“Being captain, there is not one thing I love more than winning my
Nationals with my squad. We practiced for so many hours and so many days to
prepare for it. Our many hours of hard work paid off when we heard our names
being called into first,” McEvers said. “It was the best feeling knowing
I set not only a record for my school, but continued the tradition."
