The transition from middle school to high school can be challenging for all students. Students should expect a heavier work load, opportunities to take college courses, many exams and quizzes, and dances among other things.

Students attending high school at Langston Hughes will be required to attend a high school orientation. Meeting teachers and staff members will help kids make a smooth transition into high school and be better prepared for school. It is imperative that students do well in their classes as colleges will be looking at their grades and extracurricular activities. Incoming high school students will soon realize that they will have a heavy homework load. Organization and daily homework time will be needed to successfully complete class work.

In addition to doing homework, students have to get used to studying, reading, and taking plenty of notes to have good grades in all of their classes. Students must pay close attention in their science and math classes, as the two topics will get harder in high school. They have to learn to talk to their teachers or professor so they can ask questions and get the help they need. Students can also get help by having the right friends that have the same goals as the student. Friends that want to be successful in high school are important to have and will have a positive influence on each other.

In order to graduate from Langston Hughes, students need to have a certain amount of credits, volunteer hours, and completed projects. Students will need 30 history/social science credits and 40 English credits. For mathematics, laboratory science, and world language, students will need 20 credits. Students can also earn credit by taking electives such as advisory, avid, and technology. Students have to pass four years of Exhibitions, and earn 15 college units to graduate from an Aspire Public School.
