When most people think of the word team, they think of sports. To be a winning team, it has to have winning players. This sense of teamwork is no different in education than it is in baseball, volleyball, soccer, or any other team sport. Principals, teachers, and staff have to work together with one goal in mind: better the education of students.
Several new teachers have joined Kingston’s team this academic year, including Delene McCoy, Tiffany Rodden, and Cheryl Meyers, Kevin Meythaler, and Henry Jared. With these new teachers, the student body is ready to make this school year the best it has had in many years.
McCoy is the new music teacher at the campus, and she is fitting in perfect. She explained to me that she took this job because of the educational opportunity to teach. She has many things going on within the music department at this very moment.
When McCoy was asked what her thoughts were on the school so far, she answered, “I am impressed with the students’ work, the staff feels like family, and it’s right down my alley.”
The school also welcomed another teacher to the campus, Cheryl Meyers. Meyers is the new agriculture teacher, and she advises the FFA (Future Farmers of America) Chapter, agricultural classes, and the shop. Meyers explained that there are three things that work together to give her students a grade. They are: Student Agricultural Experiences (SAE projects), classroom grades, and FFA. She is expecting to build the FFA Chapter up and get things going again.
Rodden is no stranger to the Kingston campus. Rodden has been teaching 3rd Grade for several years, but she felt like something was calling her to the high school side of the campus. Rodden explained that there are many new activities coming up for the school year. She is not only the family and consumer science teacher, but also the adviser for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) (. She said she was very involved with the club while she was in high school. Over the summer, Rodden and three students, Kimberly Edgmon, Kimber Davidson, and Kristin Johnson, went to Nationals with their FCCLA project. Meythaler has joined the school this year teaching business classes. Asked why he came to Kingston, Meythaler said, “I thought that this would be a great place to raise a family.”
Meythaler’s main goal for the school year is to present business in a fun context.
Henry is the new history teacher for the Kingston School this year. When asked about the students, Henry replied, “The students overall are very intelligent, opinionated, and fun to be around. Henry also commented, “The teachers are very helpful as well.
When asked what the hardest thing about teaching history was, Henry explained, “Getting the students to understand that history still applies to them today.”
All in all, the music, family and consumer sciences, agriculture, business, and history departments are at a good start and encourage everyone to get involved. The student body is glad to have these new teachers at Kingston. Rodden had a quote by John Wesley that to her explained what every teacher and student should live by:
“Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can.”
