When it comes to music, we can all agree on one thing, we don’t all have the same taste. It is like desert, everybody doesn’t like to eat carrot cake because some believe it is a fruit, and those people don’t want to waste a good desert on fruit, chocolate cake is for them. But then you also have those people who prefer something cold and smooth, like ice cream. Music is a lot like this for people, some like rock or hip-hop, while others would rather sit down and listen to a good symphony or country album.

In 2008, a band named Calling Out Closer started up with a band that their website said is to ‘utilize its member’s varied and individual musical tastes, creating a fluid quality to its sound that is both purposive and thoughtful, yet involuntary and casual’.  The group from Reading, Pennsylvania consists of Bryn Graybill as lead vocals as well as lead guitar, Ben Smither also shares lead vocals with Graybill but plays keyboards as well, Chris Williamson comes in as bassist, Scott Valenza playing guitar, and Fred Lingenfelser on the drums. Calling Out Closer has written music to please many audiences, on a wide range of topics, such as love, hope, faith, neglect, despair, and doubt. But overall the band shows time and time again that the main thing that ties it all together is the common belief that God fully exists in both “infinite and intimate, in both physical and spiritual”, as their website says. They realized that not everybody has the same tastes in music, so why not let all band members give something different, and give listeners a mixed sound to enjoy?

In March of 2008, Calling Out Closer was pleased to announce the release of their first album, ‘Stars and Broken Hearts’. Along with the release also came playing some shows and also a realization for the listeners that music isn’t just sound and words, it’s meant to mean something, and the Calling Out Closer guys give us a great mix of keys, guitars (electric and acoustic), and other added sounds to show that music can expand and give more meaning to faith and the love we feel.  “I’ve never been more excited about the band and where we’re headed, and I think the rest of the guys would say the same,” Graybill expresses openly.

One thing is for sure when it comes to Calling Out Closer, it is something different, but gives a message everybody can bring something away from.

Calling Out Closer new parallel ep comes out on December 4, 2009.
