In a world where information is available at the slightest touch to a keypad, people are speaking out about what they like. By doing so, they put pressure on movie producers, writers and musicians to produce quality product at a reasonable price.

On trading sites such as Amazon, there are are positive and negative reviews underneath the product description . With enough negative reviews, a limited number will buy the product. The same thing happens with songs. When CD’s were popular, only one good single on the album was needed for people to pay for the whole thing. However, with each single being separately available in databases such as iTunes, quality has to be heard on every track. Artists are forced to produce good music, or else no one buy their songs.

Movies are also beginning to need to pay more in quality for hopes of quantity. For example, should a movie come out opening weekend and have a negative response, within minutes that news can spread across the internet via Twitter and Facebook. All the friends of one person can quickly discover that a movie was bad (or good!) and spread the word to their friends. Because of this rapid conversing, a movie that did well opening weekend could see an instantaneous dropping of sales. With that same movement, a good movie could see a continuous rise in sales.

Even books are starting to see a new dynamic. Now online, it is possible to preview a book before you buy it. For a few dollars, the first few chapters of a book become available to the purchaser. If the buyer does not like the book, then they need not buy the rest. This is convenient for those who do not have the time to peruse a book before buying it at a bookstore. In addition, reviews are widely available for those who do not wish to spend even a single dollar on a book they may not enjoy.

The phenomenon is revealed in a single book series. Back when J. K. Rowling first released Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, its popularity spread by word of mouth, but by the time Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows was released the popularity had exploded through means of the internet.

The people have spoken. We are bringing back an era where the consumer can make demands on the producers. We demand quality and we demand it now.
