With the national election heating up and the competition rising, one would hope that students’ interest in politics would have followed the same course. Unfortunately, the Student Government Association campaign featured a mere 15 candidates for a total of 11 positions.
Even though there was more of a race this year, compared to last year, most of the positions were fought for unopposed, giving the student body little to no choice as to who they wanted to represent their school. The lack of interest in positions also may indicate a lack of interest in SGA completely, Many students may not fully understand what the SGA really does behind the scenes or the roles of each position, other than the obvious roles like President, Secretary, or Treasurer, which is vital when it comes time to vote.
The officers of SGA hold a lot of power when it comes to decisions about major school events and even some school policies. Students should be excited about the responsibility SGA requires and about choosing the candidates they want to hold that responsibility. With only one candidate running for each position, that choice is no longer available. The only choice is whether to vote for the single candidate running or not to vote at all for that position.
Even if you do bubble an “A” next to their name just because they are the only candidate running, they still have a chance of losing the election. Something a lot of students don’t know is that the candidate needs at least 50 percent of the student body vote if they are running unopposed.
We at The Prowler understand that participating in SGA is a major time commitment that some may not be willing to accept, or handle due to other responsibilities. But we students need options when we vote.
More importantly, we need people who are enthusiastic about the possibility of these prestigious positions and people who would be willing to fight for those roles.
