After receiving awards and performing at the Indoor Marching Concert, the Marching Lynx are preparing a new theme, “Love,” for their performance in San Diego, Calif.

“The band has had a tremendous season,” Kessler said. “They committed a lot of time and effort to the show.”

At the concert Monday, the band played the three movements “Work,” “Rest” and “Play” from the field show “Life Rhythms” along with “Sweet Land of Liberty,” a song the band performed in the parades.

In addition to these pieces, band director Kevin Kessler added other songs such as “Gimme Some Lovin’” by the Spencer Davis Group and “Come on Feel the Noize” by Quiet Riot.

In late December the band will perform at the Holiday Bowl halftime show and march in the Big Bay Balloon parade in San Diego. For the “Love” theme Kessler selected a medley of love songs including “Surf City” by the Beach Boys, “Love Shack,” “The Power of Love,” “Money Can’t Buy Me Love” and other pieces.

In its last competition at the Quad State Band Festival Oct. 17, the Marching Lynx placed first in Class AAA field. The percussion, winds and colorguard received the Outstanding award in Class AAA.

At Orange City, Iowa, the band competed in the Dutchman Field Championships Oct. 10 and placed third in Class AAAA. The winds, percussion and colorguard received the Outstanding Class AAA Award.

At the Festival of Bands in Sioux Falls Oct. 3, the band received the Parade Sweepstakes Champion Award, first place Class AAA in parade Award, third place Class AAA in field, and sixth place open class field.

At the Tri-State Band Festival, they were the Combined Sweepstakes Champions, Parade Sweepstakes Champions, placed first in Class AAA parade and field. The winds, percussion, colorguard and drum majors all received Outstanding Class AAA awards.

“The weather was horrible the last couple of weeks of the season,” Kessler said, “yet they worked hard right up to the last performance and the hard worked paid off.”
