The new sign donated by the graduating seniors. - Staff

Every year, the graduating Southern Door senior class gives back to the school and community with a gift. Last year, the graduating class helped fund and landscape the Gayle Orloski Memorial, located on the side of the high school office doors; they also donated Kindles to the Door County Cancer Society.
This year’s senior class is donating a sign to be placed in front of the district office. The old sign, which Mr. Anderson, the old art teacher, had a part in, was over forty-years old and in dire need of a replacement. The new sign, which cost around $4,100, was made possible due to the 2012 senior class funds and various school funds set aside for cases such as these.
Some students voiced concern over the sign. These students were upset that they were not involved in the decision-making process. Senior class officers, Katie B., Sara M., Jacob H., and Emily B., along with their class advisor decided on the sign idea. The concern students felt that the class officers should have asked more of the senior class to see what they felt the school needed. They also question whether or not the school actually needed a new sign. This concern is good because it shows that even as they are graduating, these students still care about the quality of our school. Eventually, everything worked out and a new sign, which will be completed in about a month’s time but is already on display, will be seen in front of the Southern Door District Office.
The majority of money used for these gifts comes from fundraising. Starting freshman year, all classes participate in different fundraisers to gather money for their Prom and Homecoming. The remainder of the money will be spent on a gift for the school or community and a senior banquet. The community supports each class by participating in the fundraisers, from buying 50/50 raffle or food from the concession stands, while the school provides a positive learning environment, so each graduating class feels the need to give back. This year’s junior class has plenty of surplus funds already so it will be interesting to see what they give to the school or community.
