Most high school students are indecisive about their future. They alternate between majors, careers, and professions, unsure of what path to take or who to be. Kyle Elseroad, a friendly, determined senior at Beckman High School, is an exception. During his junior year, he decided to become a soldier, a decision that will define the rest of his life.
Growing up, Elseroad admired his older brother and viewed him as his mentor. “I liked following him and still do,” he commented. Thus, when his brother became an Airborne Ranger in the 101 Airborne Rangers unit last year, Elseroad became interested in the military as well. “I want to be able to protect my country and my family,” he explained. Although joining the army is not an easy decision to make, Elseroad never questioned his choice. He became determined to do whatever was necessary to be able to fight for his country and be as courageous as his older brother.
His decision was made easier by the recruiters that came to Beckman High School last year to inform students about the opportunities offered by the military. “I just started talking to them and they told me the steps I needed to take to become a part of the armed forces,” he commented. After talking to the recruiters, he signed up for PT’s – basic preparatory drills- to familiarize himself with the army and experience what it would be like in boot camp. Although the drills were challenging and the soldiers told him that boot camp would be much more grueling, Elseroad’s dream never wavered.
Once he joins the army and endures the harsh physical and mental training that all soldiers must go through, he wants to join the ground force. As a soldier in the ground force, he will be expected to be in the front lines and go where he is told. “It seemed like a logical choice,” he expounded. Despite the fact that the front lines have the highest death rate, he is not afraid - a clear testimony to his bravery.
After serving our country for ten years, Elseroad plans to attend college and pursue his other passions- teaching. He wishes to be a benefactor by not only protecting the country but also by enlightening the future generation.
Clearly, Elseroad is a unique high school student. While most are unsure of the path they will take in life, he has already defined his goals and aspirations. He knows what he wants and will stop at nothing to achieve his dreams. Once he leaves Beckman High School, Elseroad will be of great service to both our country and society as a whole.
